DC Streetcar Construction Update

For the last several months, DDOT and the streetcar team have been busy at work along H Street and Benning Road on the last leg of streetcar construction. Right now the team is performing final design and construction for several areas of the project, including streetcar turnarounds, the Car Barn Training Center, pole and overhead wire installation, track installation for turnarounds, pocket tracks, and final roadway.

DC Streetcar – OCS Pole Installation

The DC Streetcar Team began installing Overhead Catenary System (OCS) poles on H Street in September. These poles will eventually hold wires and power the streetcars. OCS pole installation will be occurring throughout the H /Benning corridor the rest of this month, wrapping up by October. Stringing wire from the OCS poles will begin in October.

Pocket Track Pour

On September 12th, 2013, the DC Streetcar Team poured the first section of the track slab at the pocket tracks on Benning Road between 21st Street and 24th Street. To prepare for the pour, the team sets and welds rail and installs rebar, cross-bonds (for electrical continuity) and formwork. Once finished, the pocket track will allow streetcars to enter and exit the Car Barn Training Center. Work on the pocket track will continue into early October.
