Track Slab & Roadway Restoration from Cross-Bonding Begins This Week

The DC Streetcar construction team has scheduled track slab and roadway restoration to begin Tuesday, October 8th at the four H Street locations where cross-bond work was carried out during the summer. The locations are:

  • 400 block of H Street, near 4th Street,
  • 600 block of H Street, mid-block,
  • 900 block of H Street, mid-block, and
  • 1300 block of H Street, near 14th Street.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8th and 9th, the construction team will repair the roadway between the tracks. To accommodate the work, eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane, in the curb lane, and parking will be prohibited in the affected blocks. The eastbound restrictions will be in place from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm each day; the westbound restrictions will be in place from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Advance warning signs will be in place. In both cases, the work areas will be covered with steel plates and the lanes will be re-opened to normal traffic and parking at the conclusion of each work day.

On Thursday, the affected blocks will remain open to normal traffic and parking while the work areas remain covered with steel plates.

On Friday, October 11th, the traffic restrictions will again apply as the construction crews place asphalt. Normal traffic and parking will be restored at the end of the work day and will continue throughout the weekend.

On Monday, October 14th through Wednesday, October 16th, restrictions will again be in place as construction crews pour the concrete for the final roadway surface of the streetcar track-slab areas in the right eastbound and westbound travel lanes of the affected blocks. After the concrete pour, the one-lane-only and no-parking restrictions must remain in place for 48 hours to allow sufficient time for the concrete to cure and develop sufficient strength to support traffic.

The restoration work is the final stage of cross-bonding. This process, which began in June, required excavating a portion of the roadway and track slabs between the eastbound and westbound tracks in order to install an electrical bond between the eastbound and westbound tracks. The electrical bond is essential for the streetcar traction power system.
