Cross-Bonding of Streetcar Tracks Proceeds to 600 & 1300 Blocks of H Street NE

On Monday, July 29th, the DC Streetcar construction team started work on cross-bonding the streetcar tracks in the 600 block of H Street NE near the 7th Street intersection, and plans to start work within a few days on the cross-bonding in the 1300 block, near the 14th Street intersection.

At each location, the cross-bonding work will take approximately four weeks. Weekday traffic and parking restrictions are required along the work zones.

The construction team will soon complete the first H Street cross-bond – between 9th and 10th Streets. The remaining cross-bonds  are located just east of 4th Street, at 12th Street, and at 16th Street and Benning Road.  Cross-bonds at these locations will be installed later this summer.

To install the cross-bonds, the contractor must excavate a four-foot wide section of the roadway and track slabs between the eastbound and westbound tracks in order to install conduit and electrical cable. This infrastructure provides an electrical bond between the eastbound and westbound tracks, which is essential for efficient operation of the streetcar traction power system.

Throughout the work zones, traffic will be shifted into the curb lanes, where parking will be prohibited from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Mondays through Saturdays.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and advance warning signs and traffic barrels will be used to set up lane closures along the work zone.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather, material and equipment availability and other unforeseen conditions. We encourage you to contact us at any time to share concerns or request more information. Please direct inquiries to Thank you for your patience!
