Cross-Bonding of Streetcar Tracks Set to Begin June 25th at 9th & H Streets NE Posted on June 25, 2013 On Tuesday, June 25th, the DC Streetcar construction team plans to start work on cross-bonding the streetcar tracks on H Street N.E. near 9th Street. The work will take approximately three weeks, with an estimated completion date of Tuesday, July 16th. Weekday traffic and parking restrictions will be required. Cross-bonding is the process of excavating a portion of the roadway and track slabs between the eastbound and westbound tracks in order to install an electrical bond between the eastbound and westbound tracks. The electrical bond is essential for the streetcar power system. Cross-bonding must be done at five H Street locations and will take approximately three weeks at each location: Just east of 4th Street, Between 7th Street and 8th Street, Just east of 9th Street, At 12th Street, and Just west of 14th Street. The street sections to be excavated extend from the outside of the eastbound track across the street to the outside of the westbound track, and will be approximately four feet long. The work will be staged in order to minimize traffic disruptions. Pedestrian crossings will be maintained, but there will be temporary weekday parking restrictions in the work area. Advance warning signs and traffic barrels will be used to set up lane closures along the work zone. The schedule is subject to change due to weather, material and equipment availability and other unforeseen conditions.
