Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project
The Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project will improve safety conditions and operations, address deficiencies in infrastructure, and provide additional transit options in Ward 7 and Ward 5 and along the approximately two miles of Benning Road NE from Oklahoma Avenue NE to East Capitol Street. This includes:
- Enhancing safety and operations along the corridor and at key intersections
- Improving transportation infrastructure conditions
- Rehabilitating roadways and bridges that cross the Anacostia River, DC-295, and CSX freight rail tracks
- Enhancing and installingpedestrian and bicycle facilities
- Extending streetcar transit service to the Benning Road Metrorail station on a center-running alignment
H Street Bridge NE Replacement Project
Reconstruction of this bridge will enable private and public investment, the region’s most significant transportation hub. Today, the Hopscotch Bridge carries H Street NE over the railroad tracks behind Union Station. In order to make room for trains to pass below, the bridge rises above H Street’s normal elevation. Replacing the existing bridge will mean temporarily removing the streetcar stop atop the bridge but will include replacing it closer to the Union Station access with two sets of embedded tracks for smoother operations and more efficient travel.
